Tesla Model P85D vs. Ferrari F12 in a 1/4 Mile Drag Race

This is a cool video of Tesla's new rocket ship of an electric sedan drag racing a Ferrari. The initial acceleration of the P85D is crazy, but the Ferrari is clearly no slouch either. It really shouldn't be, at approximately three times the price of the Tesla.

In other Tesla news to which I've been meaning to link, the Model S will be getting a software update over the air that will help you make sure that you're never out of range of one of their super chargers to help eliminate "range anxiety". Additionally, Tesla's "autopilot" mode should be added—also through and OTA software update—within the next few months.

All Future Shop Stores Abruptly Close Across Canada

They sure didn't waste any time. Future Shop just locked their doors, put up signs for customers—I assume employees didn't know either by the lack of any leaks at all—and shut down their website and mobile apps. Can you imagine coming into work and finding the place essentially all boarded up with no warning?

According to a report in the Vancouver Sun, 66 Future Shop stores will be closed permanently and 65 others will turn into Best Buy locations. In all, 1,500 jobs will be lost, but that doesn't sound right. With 66 stores closing, that would only be about 23 employees per location. There has to be more employees than that. I think I've seen more people than that on duty at one time. The Best Buy locations will reopen on April 4th.

Not cool Best Buy Canada.

Elon Musk Teases That Tesla OTA Firmware Update Will 'End Range Anxiety'

I just have to say thank you to Musk and Tesla for bringing automobiles into the 21st century with computers, smartphones and tablets. We take for granted that we get updates to our devices that give them new features or better battery life—for free. The fact that it's amazing and surprising that a car company is finally doing the same thing is kind of sad.

I want one of these puppies so bad.

Life After Cancer: How the iPhone Helped Me Achieve a Healthier Lifestyle

I'm definitely a few days late in posting this. I'm not even going to quote a single passage out of this fantastic piece from Federico Viticci. Just do yourself a favour and read the whole thing. It's excellent and worth your time.

Although my circumstances pale by comparison, the iPhone, its apps, and accessories are a major factor in my own health transformation over the past several years. Since I got my first iPhone—the iPhone 3GS—I've lost more than 40 pounds and am in much better shape than ever before in my life. The convenience of being able to track all my food, sleep, and exercise on a device that I always have with me was a huge leap forward for me, and quite frankly, removed excuses. There's no reason why you can't take 30 seconds to record your meal or your workout.

Great read.

Google Just Learned How to Mix Cocktails

It's not that you couldn't look up cocktail recipes on Google before, but now they show up as cards in Google's Knowledge Graph. You can just see the recipe for your favourite cocktails right in the search results without having to follow a link.

And I thought I couldn't like Google more.

Tom Hanks: Music Video Star

So, I'm not a Carly Rae Jepsen fan, but Tom Hanks lip-syncing this entire video is really awesome. It's even cooler that Hanks requested to be in the video. I could do without the Justin Bieber cameo at the end, but I guess you can't have everything you want.

Pet Peeve of the Week: You're Using 'Ironic' Incorrectly

The word 'ironic' is one that I avoided using for a long time because I was very aware of the tendency for it to be misused, and I didn't feel I could reliably use it correctly myself. However, as I've gotten older, I've mixed it in more often and have caught myself misusing it just as I feared.

First, I don't think I was paying enough attention in high school English class when we covered irony, and thus, maybe I didn't fully grasp its meaning. Second, I think I just used it the way I'd heard others use it so often in the past—wrongly.

An example of this would be to say, "Ironically, the hapless Toronto Maple Leafs are playing their last game of the year on April Fool's Day." That is not ironic. You could say 'fittingly', 'appropriately', or maybe even 'coincidentally', but not 'ironically'.

The Huffington Post has an article on this exact topic—I've found tons—from about a year ago, where they cite Alanis Morrissette as one of the most widely known and classic examples of misusing 'ironic':

Sure, her song “Ironic” notoriously misuses the word (around 10 times) and repeatedly insists that rain on your wedding day is ironic rather than simply a bit of bad luck. But while many of us have poked fun at Morissette’s poor diction, her use of ironic to describe coincidences or annoying events is reflective of how many of us casually misuse the term. She may not be a particularly egregious offender at all, just more prominent. Isn’t it ironic? Actually, no, not really. But it’s easy to misuse the term in a world where so few of us know what the correct meaning is.

It's worth a read. They go on to explain several different types of irony, and how to use them correctly.

I found another site, called thatsnotironic.com, and it's a short and sweet explanation of the difference between irony and coincidence, including some hilarious examples from George Carlin, including this one:

For instance: a diabetic, on his way to buy insulin, is killed by a runaway truck. He is the victim of an accident. If the truck was delivering sugar, he is the victim of an oddly poetic coincidence. But if the truck was delivering insulin, ah! Then he is the victim of an irony.

In the end, this one is really just more fun to pick on than it is an egregious abuse of the English language. It's an extremely common error, and I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you. The only people who care about this stuff are me, and a handful of other pedantic nerds out there.

Here's a video of George Carlin picking on some of his English language pet peeves, including 'irony' (at about 1:45):

AC/DC's Thunderstruck - Amazing Acoustic Solo

Luca Stricagnoli absolutely kills it. About a year ago I posted 2Cellos doing their awesome rendition of Thunderstruck. This guy is right their with them.

The 2Cellos version is worth a repost, too.

Some Recent Tesla Model S P85D News and Updates

I'm totally lusting after the new Tesla Model S P85D, but can't even come close to affording one. The Verge has been busy over the past couple of weeks posting about this beast of a car, so I think they might be as in love with it as I am.

Here's a video The Verge shared of people's reactions to the P85 D's "insane" mode:

Chris Ziegler of The Verge also got to test drive one on a makeshift test track outside of Citi Field in New York. He had this to say:

I’m paraphrasing, but that was the gist: there’s no trick to turning the P85D into a guided missile. You just punch it.

Oh, and apparently the P85D will also be getting a speed bump through an OTA software update. Welcome to cars in 2015.

Want one even more than before.

iOS 9 Will Reportedly Focus on Stability and Optimization Over New Features

Mark Gurman is back at it again over at 9to5Mac. He has some of the best sources and a very impressive track record for Apple rumours and scoop over the past couple of years.

Here's what he has to say this time:

Sources tell us that iOS 9 engineers are putting a “huge” focus on fixing bugs, maintaining stability, and boosting performance for the new operating system, rather than solely focusing on delivering major new feature additions. Apple will also continue to make efforts to keep the size of the OS and updates manageable, especially for the many millions of iOS device owners with 16GB devices.

If true, I think this is a great direction for Apple. In iOS 8, almost my entire wish list of new feature requests was addressed. Now, if they would all work much more reliably, I would be a very happy camper. I expect that the media will try to spin this negatively, as they generally do with Apple news, but I think Apple can sell it just fine. All the really hard core iOS users are begging for these bug fixes, and all "normal" users—99.9% of the user base—barely use most of the new or power user features anyway. I know of all my friends, I have to teach most of them about the new features I think they would find useful. Not one of them could explain an extension, or continuity, or customizable share sheets.

Everything You Need to Know About Apple's New Photos App For Mac

Apple is set to release their replacement for both iPhoto and Aperture in the spring, and The Verge has an in-depth early look for you.

I for one am looking forward to getting off of iPhoto and onto something that seems to be both simpler and more powerful—at least for editing—at the same time.

Now You Can Watch the 2015 Super Bowl Commercials Without Watching the Super Bowl

Vox is keeping a page updated with all the Super Bowl commercials as they become available. In Canada, we get stuck watching the same Tim Horton's commercial over and over again, but if you've got an iPad and an Apple TV, you can send these commercials to your TV over AirPlay during halftime or whenever there's a break in the game.

This Mophie commercial might be the best one I've seen so far:

Tim Cook, on the Apple Watch:

My expectations are very high for it. I’m using it every day. I love it and can’t live without it.

Apple Posts Record Results for Q1 2015

Federico Viticci of MacStories

Apple has published their Q1 2015 financial results for the quarter that ended in December 2014. The company posted revenue of $74.6 billion. The company sold 21.4 million iPads, 74.5 million iPhones, and 5.5 million Macs, earning a quarterly net profit of $18 billion.

$18 billion in profit. That's billion with a 'b'. That's an all-time record for Apple. Wow.

This NFL Bad Lip-Reading Video Is Hilarious

This video is just fantastic. Every ten seconds I kept saying to myself "that one's my favourite", and then next one would be even better. Worth four minutes of your time.
